High-Power Rifle

Rifle shooting (high power or a cartridge larger than a .22 long rifle)

Lima Sabres offers a variety of opportunities and programs for rifle shooters from the beginning shooter to the serious competitor out to 200 yards and during certain competitions out to 300 yards.

Rifle range

The rifle range is open daily unless there is a match or specific program scheduled which will be noted on the calendar. Shooting can be done at various distances including 25 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards and 200 yards. You also may shoot under an open-sided shelter with a roof that provides shelter from the sun and rain. Heavy, cement benches are under the shelter for bench-rest shooting. You also may shoot from the grass but please remember if more than one shooter is on the range to observe the same firing line for safety purposes.

High power matches

Typically once a month from April through October on the first Saturday of each month (check the range calendar), Lima Sabres offers a high-power match that shoots in the standing, sitting and prone positions. An 80-round match consist of:

Standing off hand: 20 slow-fire, single shots for record, standing (off hand) at 200 yards.

Sitting: 20 shots rapid fire (60 seconds for two strings each of 10 shots) for record at 200 yards.

Prone: 20 shots rapid fire (70 seconds for two strings each of 10 shots) for record at 300 yards

Slow-fire prone: 20 shots slow-fire, single shots prone at 300 yards on a reduced target to simulate 600 yards.

Each position provides two sighter shots to verify the point the shot is hitting the target. Lima Sabres typically offers one 60-round slow-fire match each year at 300 yards on the reduced target to simulate 600 yards.

Electronic targets: All high-power shooting is done on electronic targets allowing the shooter to see the exact shot placement on a tablet or their smart phone, which replaced altering shooting while half the shooters worked the pits pulling and marking shot placement on the targets.

For the new high power shooter or people who may want to see if high power shooting is for them, we offer club rifles and ammunition for a fee that generally is the price of ammunition (you must email us one week before a match to so we can have the rifle and ammunition ready).

Registration opens at 8 a.m. with the first shot at 9 a.m. You must arrive before 8:30 a.m. to register.
